Sugar, slower
Low glycemic index is not keto. It is a different lever.
GI asks how fast a food’s carbohydrate hits the blood. Keto asks how much carbohydrate you eat at all. Both talk to sugar. They are not the same diet.
What GI actually measures
Feed someone 50 grams of available carbohydrate from one food. Watch blood glucose for two hours. Compare that curve to pure glucose (GI 100). That ratio is the glycemic index.
Diabetes Canada bands: low ≤ 55, medium 56–69, high ≥ 70. They tell people with diabetes or prediabetes to choose lower-GI foods more often — as one tool, next to portions and the whole meal.
Meat, fish, eggs, cheese, nuts, and most non-starchy vegetables do not get a GI. There is not enough carbohydrate in a normal serving to run the test. A keto plate is already off the scale.

Glycemic load — the missing half
GI ignores how much you eat. Glycemic load ≈ (GI × grams of available carb in the portion) / 100. Low load ≤ 10, medium 11–19, high ≥ 20.
Watermelon is high GI and low load — you are not eating 50 g of sugar from a wedge. A bowl of low-GI pasta can still dump a high load. Health Canada refused GI on food labels for this reason: a ‘low GI’ stamp without portion can mislead.
Low GI vs keto, on one table
| Question | GI | Keto |
|---|---|---|
| Oats, beans, pasta, fruit | Often allowed if the GI is low | Usually too much carb for ketosis |
| Eggs, fish, olive oil, broccoli | Not ranked — almost no carb | The actual plate |
| Insulin demand | Blunts the spike, still a spike | Removes most of the spike |

Canada, specifically
Diabetes Canada has recommended choosing lower-GI foods more often since the 1990s. Their food guide is a swap list: barley instead of sticky rice, lentils instead of instant potato, berries instead of juice.
Health Canada’s published position is that putting a GI number on a package would be misleading: the same food can produce a different glucose rise depending on how much you eat, how you cook it, and what you eat it with. You will not find a legal ‘low GI’ stamp on a Canadian grocery label.
KetoLab does not treat, prevent, or cure diabetes. A low-GI pattern and a ketogenic pattern are grocery maps. Medicine, meters, and dose changes belong with a clinician licensed in your province.
Where GI lies
Fat and acid slow gastric emptying. Ice cream and chocolate can look ‘low GI’ while remaining dessert. Vinegar on a meal can flatten a curve; it does not make fries a vegetable.
Ripe fruit climbs. Green banana is slower than brown. Hot potato is faster than potato salad. Instant oats outrun steel-cut. Cooking and ripeness move the number more than a brand slogan.
A 2025 evidence map in eClinicalMedicine found higher-fiber and carbohydrate-restricted patterns had the clearer glucose effects; low-GI trials were smaller and less consistent. GI is a useful ranking, not a magic diet.
A working bench of numbers
Approximate published GI and a typical-portion load. Values vary by variety, ripeness, and lab. Education only.
| Food | GI | Load | Band | Keto plate? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Broccoli Almost no available carb. GI is a rounding error. | 15 | 1 | low | Fits |
Avocado Fat and fiber. A keto staple that is also low GI. | 15 | 1 | low | Fits |
Eggs Not on the GI scale — too little carbohydrate to rank. | 0 | 0 | low | Fits |
Salmon / meat / cheese Diabetes Canada: foods with almost no carb are not ranked. | 0 | 0 | low | Fits |
Lentils Classic low-GI. Carbs are real — usually too many for ketosis. | 32 | 5 | low | Bridge only |
Apple Low GI, still sugar. A keto plate skips juice and most fruit. | 36 | 6 | low | Bridge only |
Steel-cut oats Diabetes Canada low-GI grain. Instant oats jump to high GI. | 55 | 13 | low | Bridge only |
Pasta, al dente Firm pasta is surprisingly low GI. Overcooked pasta is not. Still not keto. | 49 | 16 | low | Bridge only |
Ice cream (typical) The trap: fat slows the spike, so GI looks ‘good’. Load and extras still matter. | 51 | 8 | low | Bridge only |
Ripe banana Green banana is lower GI. Brown and overripe climbs fast. | 62 | 16 | medium | Bridge only |
Watermelon High GI, low GL — you don’t eat 50 g of carb from it. This is why GI alone misleads. | 76 | 8 | high | Bridge only |
White bread The reference spike. Whole-grain sliced bread is often still medium–high. | 75 | 10 | high | Bridge only |
Hot potato Cooked-and-cooled potato drops GI (resistant starch). Still a starch bomb. | 82 | 21 | high | Bridge only |
White rice (typical) Basmati and parboiled sit lower. Jasmine and sticky rice sit higher. | 73 | 29 | high | Bridge only |
